During most of August, I worked on Bettie, a Bike Hugger project to build a sport-utility bike.
A sport-utiity bike is built to carry stuff, including Cap'n and replace a car for errands and commuting to work.
For a trip to the vet, groomer, a longer walk, or just to ride around, I load Cap'n up and we're off. It's fun, doesn't require a car, and the best part is no parking worries! To learn more about Bettie and commuting with Cap'n, check Bike Hugger's Bettie tags and the photo galleries.
Our doggy day care sent us this photo of the pets partying with doggie ice cream. My caption is, "lining up and knocking 'em back." (and the one there on the left that couldn't wait.)
ok, so, I was listening to iTunes most of the day and random shuffle got to Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction that starts with dogs barking and cappy totally freaked out and barked her head off for the whole song.
That song is now categorized as a barking song in iTunes.

Cappy's back to being the happy, little fun dog. Getting better, she's been bounding about the house, playful, loving and we're glad she's back.

Jeremy of the WSJ noticed my foray into mainstream media . . .
Announcing City Dog Life with D.L. Byron, a Seattle PI blog about "life with urban dogs. Whether it's spending most of their days under a desk, minding the studio, sniffing the factory floor, barking at delivery drivers, or going to doggy day care, urbanized dogs always have something going on and that's what we'll blog about here."
What started here, on Pug Blog, I'm going to continue and expand for a broader audience on PI Blogs.
We were bummed to miss the Pug Gala, but were visiting my Mom for Mom's day. A friend sent me the best photo of She-Devil.
And from the BBC, we have a dog-powered scooter!
From the Seattle PI, an article on Dog Portraits from Noisy Dog Studios, including pugs! For the Captain, we'd have to have a nautical portrait, with her in a captain's cap, etc.
From our readers . . .

Jesus, is the Forrest Gump of pugs, appearing in photos throughout history!
We get asked a lot why we named our pug Cap’n and today’s photo should provide all the necessary proof. Note the look on her face, which is saying, “yeah, those dogs behind me … losers. And I’d like to go home now.” Cappy has been in daycare a few extra days this week while I was travelling and while she’s good with her daycare homies, she does diss them a bit, and obviously thinks they way the lay together like that is lame.
(A few moments earlier she was laying with them, but wouldn't let on to that.)
Reading about Marley, "the world's worst dog," I wondered if there were any bad pugs? I mean, I don't think it's in their nature to be bad. Playful, ornery, cute, clownish, but bad? Don't think so.
Ah yes . . . a pug party sponsored by Purina with great video. Thanks readers for that one!
While we were skiing in Colorado at Keystone and Copper Mountain, cappy was in doggy day care. This morning, happy to be back in her own yard, in the pooping grounds, she bounded about, sniffed like crazy, and kicked her back legs up when she was done.
A reader sent us this page from the Westminster Kennel Club with a great video on pugs!
One of the topics I'll discuss at Bloggy Mountain High and the Essentials of Business Blogging is Pug Blog and how you can blog just about anything, including your favorite pet, hobbie, and business. If you'd like to learn more about blogging, check the brochure, visit the Blog Business Summit Seminar blog and register now! The cost is $295.00. A crowd favorite at these events is the Pugcast!
Byron, Cappy's owner and blogger will be at Bloggy Mountain High, a blogging evangelism event organized by the Blog Business Summit, in Colorado next week. He'll talk about business blogging, Pug Blog, and try snowshoeing.
You can bet Pug owners worldwide will be watching for a pug(s) in the Puppy Bowl II. In fact, I vote for a pug bowl, where pug owners meet and party during the big game.
Tori Spelling returns to TV to play a fictionalized version of herself. Way more interesting than that, is the fact that her 7-yr old pug, Mimi La Rue, will play herself -- not fictionalized.
Saw this press release about Molly a pug that walks (and runs!) with a wheelchair and helps disabled kids. Molly's owner has launched a new website all about special dogs.
The Palm Beach Post reports on dogs that live the high-live in Florida. I suspect there's puppy paparazzi that follow them around from fashion show, to salon, the boutique. There may even be an equivalent Paris Hilton poodle.
I was updating the sidebars today and found Pug Clusters on Flickr.
In an article about INXS rockstar JD Fortune, we learned that his long, hard, road to stardom was spent with a pug!
Bloomberg reports on the Dog Whisperer and includes a door-bolting Pug and his escape-artist buddy, a potbellied pig -- I'd like to see photos of those two together.
According to AKC registration figures released today, Pugs are number 12 nationwide, with retrievers leading the pack.
The NYTimes reports on dog fashion, including photos of puggles and a good backstory on the reports dogs, Sticky and Otto. Cappy Cap loves to dress up (well, not Pumpkin Head, as we learned) and I think it's a pug trait.
Boing Boing reports on a pug that was stolen from a carnival by a carny and a whole community that's up in arms about it.
Manisfam reports the good news that two missing samoyed dogs have been found.
FortWayne.com reports that the latest trendy dog to hang with the stars is a puggle - a cross between a pug and a beagle.
The upsides of getting such a dog are that cross-breeds tend to be healthier because they come from a more varied genetic background. But on the other hand you can't always expect that you're going to get the best genetic traits from both breeds in any individual pup.
And of course while a breed can be trendy, dogs should never be treated like handbags. I tend to get just a little weary of Paris Hilton buying and discarding animals whenever the mood strikes her. If you're not committed to having it and loving it for the next 15 years, don't get a dog.
That said, I can see why these little puggles are so trendy. They're cute as all get out! Of course, I still think Cappy is cuter.
If you read this blog on a regular basis, chances are you've known the joy of loving something small and furry - most likely a pug. But chances are that your love for things small and furry goes beyond the pug breed. So Byron has authorized me to ask if you might share some of that love with some needy, small furry things this holiday season.
My two dear aunties - both of whom are passionate, amazing women with huge hearts - are co-founders of North Beach Progressive Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.), which has been operating since the summer of 2002. Since that time, North Beach P.A.W.S. has found loving homes for 248 abandoned domestic animals in the North Beach area - which extends along the Pacific coast north of Ocean Shores to Taholah, and east to Hoquiam. Many times, people who are just passing through, or are down on their luck leave their animals in the area to starve and die. And that's where my aunties come in.
Their organization is staffed entirely by volunteers, and they are the only animal shelter in this area. They are also responsible for the highly amusing pin-up calendars featuring local men posed semi-nude with their pets that were recently featured on KOMO news. They're a really great organization.
But now they are in danger of losing their rented shelter because the property owner intends to sell it. They need to raise a serious chunk of money in the next few months to purchase the property or another suitable property. They are a 501(c) (3), tax deductible charity, and donors receive written confirmation of their donation. Donations in memory of a person or animal, or in honor of a loved one for a holiday gift or special occasion are also acknowledged by a card to the gift recipient.
Donations can be mailed to:
North Beach PAWS
P.O. Box 962
Ocean Shores, WA 98569
Please consider making a donation this holiday season. Or if you are a blogger, please consider linking to this post so that your readers get the opportunity to send in a donation.
Thanks very much! And a special thank you to Byron and Cappy for playing host to this message.
Images are of Buddy the dog and Lucy the kitty cat - both of whom are still in need of good homes. If you love them, call my aunt, Lorna Valdez at (360)-289-2924 to talk about adoption.
Ok, you know this is going to be awesome a holiday Pug parade in full costume.
From Two Purls, a gallery of a snoozing pug.
In contrast to all that is pug, Big Paws Only launched their blog about big dogs, where they "live the big dog dream."
Listening to 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover (iTunes), Pam and I starting singing, "there's 50 ways to treat the Captain"
and the other 45 are the various bits of food that fall on the floor during the holidays.
Modern Pouch posts about the Cappy TV pugcast and asks for more. You got it! Pugcasts currently in production include, "The Gulley Barker" and "Crazy Dog."
A reader sent in this photo of a pug license plate, straight from Florida. Of course, I wondered where Pugs 1 was . . .
While Cappy took one for the team, relunctantly wearing Pumpkin Head and making the best of out it for Halloween, other pugs did better:
It soon became apparent with this costume attempt that a fancy mask wasn't going to work either and it reminded us of that terrible Eyes Wide Shut movie. So, Fancy Mask is out.
Once we do get the right costume for Cappy, we may make an appearance at Pet Daddy's Doggieween Costume Contest.
Chris sent me a link to Odie the Talking Pug and I've been showing it to friends ever since. Very funny appearance on David Letterman. And, yep, Odie says, "I love you."
Cappy was digging this outfit much better, we call her Captain Fantastic!, but I think we're going to return to Pug Foo for halloween. We're going to have a dress up at Brownrigg's soon and we'll see what else they got. It could be funny to go matchy matchy with Sprints and Cap'n, like Claudius and Cleopatra all HBO's Rome style.
Later this month, on October 29th, I'll speak about blog design at the Business Blogging 101 Seminar. Steve Broback, Molly E. Holzschlag, Robert Scoble, and Buzz Bruggeman will join me and we'll cover, "everything you need to know to get blogging now." The cost is $195.00 and you can register now.
Pugley Poo is having a Halloween contest for pugs. We'll submit a photo of Cap'n after the final custome decision is made. As previously reported, Cappy did not like Pumpkin Head.
We could tell from Cappy's less than enthusiastic response that she wasn't digging the pumpkin head costume for halloween this year. It was even worse with the pink unicorn we also tried (not photographed). She digs Pug-Foo, Pirate-Pug, Captain Fantastic, and her fleece coat, she just wasn't down with pumpkin head.
Sprints was visiting us this weekend and she would just sit in the office and stare at me and periodically push the chair around. I finally figured out that she wanted up and to sit next to me. She slept on that chair for a few hours, then would jump down, play with Cap'n, etc.
A new blog that discusses Nintendo's puppy simulator is up and posting away. A quick check and yes!, there's a pug!
Chris sent a post from Boing Boing that uses pugs to demonstrate what is and isn't black metal. When comparing and contrasting a topic, pugs make the perfect cute, fun, and lovable example. See, Pugs can't go goth or black, as they're just too happy all the time.
Cappy is just barely tall barely enough to see out the bay window and watch the neighborhood. She checks a few times a day and stretches all the way out to do it. On the occasion that she actually sees something, like a dog going by, she goes on full Pug alert and barks around the house until the threat passes.
inFlightHQ officially launched today. It's a blog in our network that offers post on tools, tips, techniques, and trip reports.
The NYTimes reports on pet shelters, heroic stories, and more rescues in New Orleans.
. . . accounts trickle in of how pets and their owners escaped the wrath of the storm. A woman who came to claim her chow told Ms. Mercer, "We swam out together, and she didn't give up on me, and I'm not giving up on her."
Pug Blog is donating to the Humane Society of the United States. I haven't seen any pugs in the coverage, but don't doubt they're trying to survive like everyone else.
I've been haunted by much of Hurricane Katrina and the story of Snowball was even more upsetting. The media is just now starting to cover missing pets, including Pets Wait for Rescue, Too on Morning Edition. In all the coverage I didn't see any animals, anywhere. That's changing with good news coming in that pet rescue efforts are underway
Reports include
Check it. For the knitters, you can upload any image and knitpro will make a knitting pattern out of it. First thing I did, well of course, was upload treat face to make a pattern. I need a Cap’n Cap.
We were driving around in the car and Angela said, "If Cap'n was a super hero, her power would be "cuteness." She'd overwhelm her opponents with the power of cuteness. And part of her superhero costume would have a visor, like today's photo, where'd she'd have the visor on, flip it up, and boom: a whopping dose of cuteness!
Byron will speak about blogging and include Pug Blog as an example this week at the Blog Business Summit. Crowd favorites are always the Treat Face photo and Pink Toy.
Clicked through most of these galleries of Roy the Pug.
Occasionally, when I take a break from writing the blog book, I kick back and Cappy joins me. We just chill like that for a while, until she sees something out the window, or hears a noise, or wants a treat.
The Orlando Sentinel reports on a Re-pug-li-can and then there's Doug The Tug Pug, who's competing in the World Championship Boatyard Dog Trials in Maine.
Cappy got herself a new pink toy and loves it. She's been carrying it over the place, sleeping with it, fighting it, chewing, batting it around, and more. She also likes to show it to us, proudly, all prancing around and we say, "Cappy . . . get down with your bad pink-toy self!"
The Bermuda Sun reports on a story with a happy pug ending.
Sarah Boxer of the NYTimes claims that cats are the internet's best friend and that, "dogs would never blog." Uhm, I don't know what parts of the blogosphere that Sarah has been clicking to, but she's missed all the dog blogging.
NASCAR.com interviews driver Jeremy Mayfield and he discusses all their pugs (and a Bulldog).
The Weekly reports on Pugfest 2005, a rescue fund raiser, in the Atlanta area.
The Cambridge Chronicle's Ask the Dog Lady column discussed Yuppy-puppy parties, "where people and their dogs are invited to sip and sup, and rais fund." I think Cappy would prefer a Pug Crawl over some fancy-pants dinner, but the causes are all good.
Never one to miss an opportunity to dress up, especially with the kids, Cap'n wore a pirate sash for the annual storming of the beach by the Seafair Pirates.
Pugcasts are now available in the iTunes Podcasts directory. iTunes makes it easy to discover and enjoy podcasts, including the pugcast. It's as simple as shopping for music and it's all free.
As Eric Rice noted during our panel at Webvisions, "he chuckles whenever a pugcasts pops into his playlist on his iPod," especially during drive time.
Use this link to subscribe to the Pugcast our search the directory for, "Pugcast."
Another fun blog about pugs and this time it comes with a widget for OS X! Nice. Bubu added to the sidebar and I'm checking the widget. Hat tip TUAW.
I find that I'm much more productive with a pug as a laptop companion. She joins me whenever I work on the couch and rests her head on the edge of my Powerbook.
Cappy's a good traveler, in the car, around town, on the plane and at Grandma's house. Not so in a hotel room. We took her with us to Portland, Oregon, on a business trip and she was a Nervous Nelly. She protected us, all night long, from any sound she heard and barked out that window at the city below.
Out of the hotel room and in the city, she was fun, as seen in the photo. She just wasn't down with the hotel room sleeping experience.
The Wonderpug photo comes courtesty of Oregon Live's, Tails of the City, Dog Blog
The ever popular Treat Face photo appears in the gallery.
Not pug related, but Napolean the Chihuahua has his own Costco Card.
Purina is offering podcasts, ringtones, and you can bet a blog is coming soon.
Few things are as relaxing as an afternoon nap with Cappy. She likes to lay on top of your stomach and sometimes brings her kitty for comfort.
One problem with this arrangement is when she hears an alarming noise and leaps off your stomach, off the bed, and starts barking her brains out. That's alarming, jarring, and messes up the whole nap vibe.
I find various bone remnants around the house, in my shoes, under the coach, etc. Today, I was putting the recycling out and found a 1/2 chewed bone in with the paper. I don't know if Cappy was being considerate of the environment, had dropped it into the garbage can, or what. She was very excited about it when I showed it to her, dancing around as if it was her long lost bone.
The Chicago Tribune reports on how to use pugs to get a date. Great idea! The article continues with more tips and notes that the local Pug Rescue is having a Desperate Housepugs theme party.
I missed pointing out last week that June 7th was our one year anniversary for the Merrylog! I can't believe I've posted 333 (as of this entry) photos of the princess - and believe me, my hard drive is filled with thousands more. :) Hope you've all been enjoying it!
And a great year it was! Props to Merry log and thanks for influences on Pug Blog
The Telegraph from Calcutta India reports on Pugs on how Pugs are little big dogs and, “you haven’t lived until you’ve been owned by a Pug!” From the article, I learned that a pug is featured in the Bollywood movie, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi.
I announced elsewhere that I'm writing a book about blogging. It's been daunting, time-consuming, difficult, emotional and that's just the proposal! There'll be mentions of Pug Blog and I'll try to get a photo of Cap'n in one of the chapters. Just as she does now, sitting at my feet, she'll be there with me through the writing of the book.
Meet Pablo. He's Dr. Mike's pug. I take Cappy with me to Mike's office and we normally have a fun visit with Pablo. Unfortunately, Pablo was voted off the island by his office mates after an regrettable pooping incident and he wasn't there, but I'm lobbying for him to come back. I mean, what other doctor lets you bring your pug?
Cappy returned from Doggy Day Care one happy pug. She was so happy to be home, she could care less that we promptly bathed here and cleaned her face, ears, and folds. We know she had a good time there, but she's been within an inch of me ever since. First thing she did was drink a giant drink of water, like she'd just ran across a desert. She also lost a few pounds and looks rather fit and trim.
The Marin Independent Journal offers more proof that pugs take over their owner lives with the story of the Pug Snuggly. A challenge for a dog coat is to not make pugs look fat or to have a giant puffy neck. We bought a dog coat that cappy hated and it later inspired her Pug Foo coat. See photos 0300 and 0301.
Pam and I are heading to Colorado for a conference and vacation and Cappy will enjoy a stay at Doggy Day Care. She loves it there and probably won't miss us as much as we'll miss her.
Cappy is under my desk most of the day and the printer is above her. Each and every printed page gets a sniff check. It's her quality control. Sometimes, I'll find a page that I forgot about crunched up in her bed.
Meet Yogi. He's a funny, chilled out 5-year old black pug with a broken tongue. He's also a local celebrity in the Nation's Capital who makes appearances at charity events, show-n-tell at local schools, and parties in the DC area.
I hope to see Yogi in a Gene Simmons outfit on a mock Kiss set.
Busta the pug makes news with ID chips and Christine Aguilera in this report from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
For our friends Up North, the Pugalug Club held a Pugtoria event. The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports on Gus the Pug and the Tribune Review remembers a man that ran a Noah's Ark for rescued pugs.
Ah yes, where there’s a blog for dogs, there’s one for cats; specifically, cats that hate you. A note that I don't think pugs can hate. They certainly don't like many things, like cell phone rings or pianos, but they're too laid back to hate.
We were outside working the crowd, promoting Pug Blog and Clip-n-Seals and didn't see the pug races, but just got the photo from Nancy Hood, the event Organizer. Nancy was thrilled to announce that the event raised over $15,000 to aid in the medical care of rescued and homeless pugs. Over 2,300 people were estimated to be in attendance and whopping 1,000 pugs, making it the most successful Seattle Pug Gala in the ten-year history of the event. We saw plenty of costumes, what appeared to be the world's fattest pug, and a pug impostor. The impostor resembled a pug and must've had pug lineage. I was like, "hmm," but then it's all about the love, so who cares -- impostor pug and owner got some free Clip-n-Seals, just like everyone else.
This little face peers up at me from under the desk whenever I'm in the kitchen cooking. No matter how tired she is, eyes drooping, her left eye is on me, waiting for something to fall from the cutting board or stove. I don't know if other pugs do this, but if she hears the aerosol spray from a can of Pam nonstick, she'll run in and lick the floor for whatever over-sprayed molecules of flavor she can find.
Cappy was burned out after the Pug Gala, slept most of the afternoon and this morning. She'd look up occasionally with the "I'm tired" look and I'd say, "go back to sleep." At the Gala, we met a ton of cool people and pugs. Thanks for all your comments and we hope you enjoy the Clip-n-Seals we gave out.
A friend sent a link to an eBay auction for an iPug shirt. A quick search on iPug and there's
Cappy and the 2 fresh crew will be at the Pug Gala this afternoon, giving out Clip-n-Seal gift packs and hanging with the other pugs. For more on the Pug Gala, check the Seattle Times article. We hope to see the Pug races. In today's photo, Cappy watches video from last year's event.
Man I wish I could nap like Cappy does. She has a talent for it and also is able to find a comfortable spot just about anywhere. Today I found her in the bathroom, on a towel, just laying there about to drift off and dream of bones, digging, sniffing, and whatever else she dreams about.
Cap’n tried out her new Pug Blog t-shirt yesterday. Pam made it for her with an infant shirt and sequins. Cap’n will wear it at the 2005 Pug Gala to promote the site. We’ll also have Clip-n-Seals samples and dog treats to hand out. When it comes to shameless self promotion, pugs are a natural.
